Naked terraces without walls and railings make an important contribution to the landscape of Kolkata, especially the older parts of the city... while the rest of the city lives in a frantic hullabaloo, these terraces live a peaceful existence...quietly witnessing the rising and setting of the sun ... and for some reason I cannot explain, drying clothes on the rooftop seems to adds to the quintessential beauty of the city :)

While I changed my camera batteries and threw the old ones in the dust-bin, one of the guards came up to me and asked... "Kya Madam ji, bomb - shomb toh nai hai na???" and then gave me a smile when I looked up flabbergasted and siad "Nai, bhaiyya ji, batteries hai"... Of course I followed it up with a smile and a flutter of eye lashes :D

I wonder if I should have coaxed the guy to rummage through the crap.... btw, it wasn't the guy in the pictures... I just found this guy very interesting ;)

Manual Mode

Trying to get a hang of the manual mode in my Point and Shoot - tried a Shutter Speed - 1/6 to 1/15 and aperture: f/2.8

the results are pretty decent .... though it took some 5 - 6 shots to get it right.... well, almost... :)

This ring belonged to my grandmother - Didi and I had bought it for her with our first salaries put together.... the first diamond in our family worn by a most precious person.... she wore it till she was conscious..... two of the few things I don't part with... memory of my cuddly cute, adorable, way ahead of her times, Dida.... and her ring....

the best part about shooting with a high aperture and slow shutter speed - how sweetly it blurs the messy background ..a.k.a my room, a near clear focus on the ring... u get brownie points for ignoring the ugly fingers.... ;)

hmmm.... u cud call this next picture an ode to one of the other regulars in my pocket.... ya, ya, i've heard about it's carcinogenic properties.... nevertheless, the packaging is quite bright and attractive.... :D

Have been following Ashley Ann's blog. Her shots are amazing, especially portraits. She keeps posting tips on how to best use your Point and Shoot Camera. I usually use my sister's Sony 10 mega pixel. But lately I have been keen on exhausting my old Olympus D595 5 megapixel one. Had lost the manual, so read up online...

Tried the Digital Macro for super closeup shots. The natural light wasn't particularly great, infact quite overcast due to the incessant rains....so used spot metering for single point exposure.

Think I am quite happy with the results...

Finally learning the art of shooting in the dark - the trick is to keep your hand real steady.. So if you don't have a tripod... get one??? heheh... well ya... but till then try a table or any other hard steady surface to keep the camera on.

This was shot at the new Ohri's joint in Hyderabad called 1857 - The waiters were dressed like the sepoys during the Mutiny.... but NO they did not have long tresses like Mr. Mangal Pandey and NO, they were not playing "Mangala, Mangalaaaaa" or any other song from the Mangal Pandey OST for background music... ;)

I am a history freak... I love relics, forts, meuseums, and anything remotely old/antique :D

The visit to the Sabarmati Ashram was a treat of its kind... although most of Gandhi ji's belongings including his ashes have been moved to the Shri Gandhi Ashram at Delhi and to the Ashram at Porbandhar, just walking on the same grounds where the great man once walked, sitting by the ghats of Sabarmati... was an experience I cannot explain....

Inspite of all the arguements that go through your mind regarding Gandhi's philosophies, his weakness when it came to Nehru, his contribution to the partition... you just cannot ignore this man's struggle, his single minded determination, .... a common man with uncommon grit under adverse conditions... Bande me tha Dum!!!

My friend who clicked these shots at the Sabarmati Ashram Meuseum was thoroughly bored and was chewing my brain till I promised him that if he took some cool shots, we would make a documentary on Gandhi ...believe me people, it's not easy clicking snaps from framed photographs... you have to get the right angle, avoid the lens flash, check the lighting... I am publishing some of my favorite snaps from this album ... Great effort bits... hope we can work on that documentary soon :)
